Product Description

Huernia pendula, also known as Bootlace Huernia, is a fascinating succulent native to South Africa. Huernia pendula has irregularly branched shoots that lean back, creep, or hang down from cliffs. The stems are green to reddish, sometimes purplish-mottled, and can reach up to 150 cm in length. The plant is leafless and has small, bell-shaped purple flowers with triangular lobes that appear from spring to midsummer. This species is endemic to river gorges in the Transkei, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It grows in pockets of soil and leaf-litter on ledges of cliffs or rock outcrops, usually on north- or east-facing aspects. The rocky habitats where Huernia pendula grows harbor a rich succulent flora, including species like Cotyledon woodii, Gasteria excelsa, and Haworthia glabrata. The plant is safe from livestock trampling and grazing due to its inaccessible habitat. The small, bell-shaped flowers are deep maroon-red and emit a scent of decaying meat to attract flies for pollination. The flowers are about .5 - 14-22 mm in diameter and have a bowl-shaped corolla.

Growing Instructions:

Huernia pendula is relatively easy to grow and not shy to flower. It prefers well-draining soil, bright, indirect light, and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
